Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics (IBP)

The Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics (IBP) is an institute of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft zur Foerderung der angewandten Forschung e.V.

The long-established activities of the department of Life Cycle Engineering (LCE) induce 200 person years of outstanding experience in developing Life Cycle Assessment methodology, software (GaBi) and databases (eco-profiles). The department provides services in Life Cycle Engineering, including Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Design for Environment (DfE), Energy Efficiency benchmarks and Material Flow Analysis (MFA). It plays an important part in different SETAC working groups, and is represented in the international UNEP/SETAC Life Cycle Initiative for fostering LCA capability, harmonization and database-access worldwide. In addition to that, IBP LCE develops and applies methods in cooperation with industrial clients as well as governmental institutions on national and international level. The department LCE is very active in the building sector, for example in cooperation with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Nachhaltiges Bauen (DGNB), in terms of EPD and PCR development and in performing LCA studies of buildings and infrastructure.
